What Is Sugar Doing to Our Veins?

Should we go vegan? Should we go carnivore, keto, low-carb or high carb? If you go online, you will find so many choices and all are apparently backed by science to be effective for our health. It can be confusing, but there does seem to be one thing that unites all of these so-called health experts and that is that most of us eat too much sugar.

I have written about sugar many times on the effects of mental health, oral health, and more. But today I would like to talk about one more great reason to reduce our sugar intake, if not eliminate it. Sugar affects our vascular system in many ways.

There is a lot of science out there about cholesterol and from my understanding, oxidized LDL is the bad one. There is a lot to the science of cholesterol, but to just simplify it a little. Sugar can increase your LDL and reduce your HDL cholesterol. It can also increase your triglycerides, another lipid or fat in our body. This is the one we need to keep low.

Sugar can affect your blood circulation and as a by produce of this varicose veins can occur. I always thought that you get varicose veins from standing around too much. I guess there are a lot of things we don’t know until we research it.

The other thing that sugar can do is harden blood vessels. The elasticity of your blood vessels decrease and becomes more narrow. The smallest blood vessels, the capillaries, are important for our eyes, kidneys and other organs. When sugar hardens these blood vessels, we are in trouble.

So many foods out there have hidden sugars. If you are eating lots of ultra processed foods, it is more than likely that you are eating a lot of sugar. I recommend trying your best to reduce the sugar that you add to your food at least.

I don’t mean to scare anyone, but I thought I should let people know. There is a lot more to the evils of sugar than an expensive dentist bill.
