Today I would like to share with you an experience that I hope will help you to embrace sport and basically use sport to increase your happiness.
The time was 8.30am, but it was hot, very hot. I was ready to start my lap of what was to be a 2-and-a-half-hour run. I was a member of a 4-person relay team, and I had been mentally and physically preparing for this for several months now, but I had no idea how it would turn out.
When I started the run, I started strong, but not too strong. I knew I had to last the distance, but I also knew that if I kept my pace at a little below half-marathon pace, I should be fine. I was fine, at least for about 40 minutes or so. My body just naturally slowed down and even though I put in the miles in my training, there was no way of knowing how running 2 and a half hours in the heat would affect my body.
I managed to complete the race with a lot less distance under my belt that I had hoped for, but in the circumstances, it was still quite good. The best part of the whole experience was the help from my teammates.
Whenever I stopped by my team station, my teammates were there to help cool me down, get me hydrated and motivated. When I was slowing down, many of them helped to pace me through my tough miles. It was not only me in the race, but it was my friends that helped me.
The running event was like a big running festival with many different teams involved. It was great to meet up with a lot of like-minded runners. When you run, you often feel alone, but this time it was very different.
The experience was not only about having fun running, but it was also a big party. People were singing, dancing and enjoying great food and drinks. The smiles on the faces of all the supporters really made it a great day.
The event really helped to make me love the sport more. I will carry this experience with me to my next running events. It is sure to help me to increase my running motivation and passion for the sport.
