Change the Name of Your Catastrophe

So, what can we do about Catastrophizing? Firstly, talk to somebody about the problem and work on externalizing it. You need to do this by changing the language that you use when you are discussing the problem with people. You speak about the problem as if it was separate from you. You don’t talk about how you believe it is part of your personality or behaviour. It may sound silly but you could give it a name, and then talk about it as if it was another person, animal or thing. You could call it the crisis monster, or trophe cat. The terms may seem amusing but they could help to reduce the panic, fear and anxiety. Give this a try. It can be used for many forms of anxiety and is designed to make some space between you and your problem.
