It is no secret that many people suffer from depression; for some people it is a debilitating illness that interrupts the way they work, socialize and think, but how do we treat it. I am not a medical doctor so I cannot go into details about what should be done pathologically to treat the disease; however, it is well known that there are many different medications prescribed by your doctor to treat it.
Personally, I don’t like to take a pill for something that can be helped in a more natural way; therefore, I try to look for what could be done about out diet. Could there be secrets to curing, or at least healing depression through diet? Well, recently I have found exciting new evidence that there is a link between inflammation and depression.
Are you aware of inflammation and what it does to our body? Some of you, when you think about inflammation, you think about maybe injuring your big toe or getting bitten by a mosquito. You may get redness, soreness, or a sensation of heat from the area that is swollen from the injury or insect bite. This is inflammation. The word comes from the root inflame, from the Latin word ‘inflammare’ meaning “to set on fire with passion.” Obviously, there is not passion involved with the pain experienced by inflammation.
This kind of inflammation that I mentioned is called acute inflammation and it is beneficial to help wounds heal; however, there is another type of inflammation that can cause chronic health problems in the body. It is called chronic inflammation. In this case it is not an insect bite or an injury that is causing the problem; it is caused by many different things, some of which are hard to control and some not so hard. One of the things that we can control is the food that we eat. Bad food choices can significantly contribute to chronic inflammation.
Chronic inflammation is one of the causes of many illnesses that are physical in nature, such as; heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity to name a few; and recently I have read that it has also been found to cause depression.
We need to look at what can be done to improve our diet, to improve our outcomes in fighting the disease of depression. Eating foods that are low in carbohydrates are known to reduce inflammation. Cutting out sugar, eating less grains and starchy vegetables can help to control inflammation; therefore, in the long term according to research, it could help to get your depression under control. Give it a try.
Is not a magical cure for curing depression. Make sure that you reach out for help from friends, family or professionals you can trust. Of course, I am available for a free first session.
