This blog post is not what you think it is.

Believe in a higher power. I came across this concept after researching the 12 Step Program. It is quite a well-known program used to cure addiction. I think a lot of you might know this already. After reading step two I stopped reading it to think about a concept mentioned in the it. They mentioned “Believing in a power that is greater than ourselves”. I am not religious and I thought that a program like this would only really help religious people, but apparently it is more spiritual than religious.

It stated that we need to think about the power that is greater than ourselves and trust in how it can guide us to get over our addiction. I started to think about this power and how it could help my life in many ways other than addiction. I did not know what the power was, but I could start to imagine it and sense it.

Recently I have been quite consistent in my running routine; running 13km for 3 days straight. I couldn’t run at the same time on the fourth day because I had a late appointment, so I thought I would give it a rest. Then I thought I would put this higher power to the test. I imagined the power supporting me to get out and run again. It helped me a lot and also helped me achieve a great time.

The power for me has no face, no religious affiliation. I don’t really know what it is at the moment, but it is there to support me and I guess to overcome things that I worry about. It could be anxiety, procrastination, or motivation. Another part of myself that is looking after me.

People that are religious may already have this power, but I am sure some of them don’t. I guess it is another way that we can help ourselves through tough times. It works for me. Maybe you can see if it works for you.
