Top Reasons for Giving up Sugar

Last week I talked about my milestone, my 1st year anniversary of switching over to a keto lifestyle. It has changed my life for the better despite there being a limit on a lot of foods that I can eat. One month before I went keto, I also gave up sugar. This was one of the hardest things that I have done, as I have always had a sweet tooth. But I have never looked back, and although going keto is not good for everyone, one thing that I strongly encourage people to do is stop eating sugar.

Over the next few weeks, I will look into the effects of sugar on our bodies and especially our mental health. Not only mental health, but also how sugar can affect many ways that we cope with life.

I will be looking into different studies on the pros and cons of sugar. What negative effects as well as positive benefits can be brought on by sugar so that you can make informed decisions on how much sugar you want in your life.

For me personally, since I gave up sugar. What I mean to say is that I gave up products that I know are high in sugar. Chocolates, sweet foods like candy, sweet coffee and tea drinks, and also just plain old sucrose sugar that I used to add to foods. After giving up all of these, I experienced a significant stabilization in my moods. I no longer had the sugar high followed by the sugar crash, and I was also a little more pleasant to be around.

I still had the desire to eat sweet things. This doesn’t mean I gorged on sweet fruit, like mangoes and grapes, etc. I did have some natural sugar substitutes like stevia, erythritol, and monk fruit. Nowadays, I feel like I am having too much stevia. This is something that I will try to cut down.

Not having sugar to fall back on was a bit tough when I needed something to pep me up after a hard workout or when I was dehydrated, but I soon learned to use low salts products. These are fifty percent salt and fifty percent potassium. It did the trick. A bit of coffee also helped.

Giving up sugar has definitely improved my moods, my figure and, I am sure, my teeth. Next week I will dig into the literature to find out other positive and or negative effects sugar has on our mental health. Stay tuned.
