How is the weather in your part of the world? Is it hot, cold, snowing or maybe raining? A lot of people associate bad weather with bad mood, sadness or even depression. It can be inconvenient when you get a downpour just when you need to get out of the house, school, or office. But it is not always negative.
If you ask a lot of people about what kind of weather they like, many will say that they prefer bright and sunny weather, but not too hot. Too much hot weather can keep us indoors with the air conditioner blaring. Snowy weather may be pleasant to look at but can be dangerous to drive in and pretty much stop us from even walking down the street. But rain has a lot of benefits, despite its damp and sogginess.
Go on to YouTube and you are sure to find many five-hour long videos of rain sounds. There are many to choose from. Rain with thunder, gentle rain, heavy rain, the list goes on. For me personally, they help me to relax, but they also claim to help people with insomnia. So why is that?
Experiments were conducted on sleep with a group with no exposure to noise and another with exposure to pink noise (this is a noise category which includes rain sounds). They found a reduction in brain wave complexity and evidence of a stable sleep amongst the people exposed to pink noise compared to the latter.
There are also many claims that listening to rain sounds can help to increase the sleep hormone, melatonin, and induce relaxation.
I think the best way to find out how good it is is to try it yourself. Personally, I find it helps me to relax, but I need to experiment with it more because sometimes I get too sleepy when I don’t want to be. It might not be a good thing to listen to when driving or when you are on the train. You may miss your stop.
Try sleeping with rain sounds and let me know how it goes.
