Recently I have been thinking about the feeling I get after I achieve a goal and wondering if I can make that feeling last longer. After achieving a goal, I feel confident, happy and, to varying degrees, unstoppable. I think many people feel the same, especially if the goal achieved is a tough one. The feeling, I believe, can be seen externally. It is displayed in body language. A person who has recently experienced success will walk with their shoulders back, their face will have a confident grin and their head will be upright.
It may be impossible to feel this degree of confidence all the time, but what if we could emulate this kind of body language when we really need it? I think this is possible.
I think many of you know the concept of ‘Faking it till you make it’. The idea is that when you are not confident at doing something, you pretend that you are. You show it in your body language, you disguise your lack of confidence from everybody else. People may be tricked into thinking that you are confident, and finally, the last person to be tricked is yourself. Eventually, you start believing you are confident and ultimately becoming confident. You enjoy the feeling of confidence and tend to gravitate more towards that behaviour compared to your normal unconfident self.
Well apparently, an important aspect of body language, posture affects our mental health. With a good posture, you can reduce feelings of depression and also increase your self esteem. Surveys were conducted on people asked to sit in a slouched position with their back curved and in an upright position with their chest open. The participants were asked to report on their positive and negative qualities, and were found to have a longer list of negative qualities when sitting in the slouched position compared to the upright position.
It definitely sounds like body language has a great influence on the way that we think about ourselves. I can definitely see why yoga is popular and many people do it first thing in the morning when they wake up. It might be a good practice to get into yoga and just do even a short routine every morning. I think I will do this from now on and see where it takes me.
