Could Sugar Be the Cause of Dementia?

Last week I mentioned how my life has been improved dramatically with the reduction in my sugar consumption. Today I want to focus on what, for me, is surprising new information about the links between dementia.

Many people are suffering with dementias and this seems to be happening in every culture of the world. As I am sure most people know, it is not only, the victims of dementia that suffer but also the friends and family that support the victims.

Since adopting the keto lifestyle, one of the first things I gave up was sugar. therefore I have been quite interested in how much my life can be improved by abstaining from it. It can be difficult to avoid sugar as more than 60% of packaged foods in supermarkets contain added sugar, but it is not impossible.

One of the alarming information that I found online is that there are links between sugar and dementia. In some circles, they are actually calling alzheimers, the most common form of dementia, ‘Type 3 diabetes’. It is an unofficial term,, but it mentions how problems with the regulation of insulin in the brain causes dementia.

Another study has linked elevated blood sugar levels in patients with higher levels of dementia. A follow-up survey was done on 2067 participants and 524 people were diagnosed with dementia. 450 of the 524 patients, the majority, did not have diabetes but did have high blood sugar levels. Therefore, it has been concluded from the survey that increased blood sugar levels (high glucose) could be a risk factor in developing dementia.

Not surprisingly, there have been surveys conducted on different indigenous cultures around the world and they have found a lower instance of dementia among the indigenous tribes of the Tsimane and Moseten people in the Amazon. These tribes have limited contact with the western world and continue with their traditional lifestyle and diet. Which, of course, means they are consuming less sugar.
