Counsellor vs Psychologist vs Psychiatrist

Counsellor vs Psychologist vs Psychiatrist, what’s the difference. Well first of all I would like to break down the types of counsellors and psychologists that are relevant. I will focus on Mental health counsellors, clinical counsellors and then psychiatrists.

Just to put it simply without making this a 10-page article, all 3 of these professionals help people with their mental health, whether it be serious mental disorders or general anxiety and stress disorders. They do this with various types of therapies, but some of the professions can do more.

Psychologists and psychiatrists are professionally accredited to diagnose mental disorders; mental health counsellors are not, even though they are experienced and will have a great understanding anyway. So what kind of difference does this make? Well, a lot if you are needing a diagnosis for your insurance or some kind of social security benefits.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors. Therefore, they in addition to using therapeutic interventions with their clients, are also qualified to prescribe medicine. Psychiatrists and psychologists are not.

So what are the advantages of using a counsellor? Counsellors deal with some of the smaller issues in your life. If you do not have a debilitating mental illness, psychotic episodes or suicide ideation then a counsellor would be the professional to go to.

Counsellors would be the people to go to if you are experiencing difficulties in your life and would like to do something about them before they get worse. They provide an important role as they can act as a preventative measure before symptoms develop into serious mental illness.

If you are having more serious issues, counsellors could help you alongside your psychiatrist or psychologist. With recommendations from these professionals, you could also see a counsellor to supplement your therapy.
