If you are like me, like most people in the world today, you have had times when you have struggled with your weight. You have felt the pressure to look thin, or maybe you need to lose weight to stay healthy on the advice of friends, family or your doctor. You may also just habitually choose to eat low fat. If there is an option for a low-fat yoghurt, or low-fat cereal, anything with the words ‘low fat’ may appeal to you then you decide to buy it.
I am not going to tell you how to lose weight without eating low fat products, but I will tell you that we should not be cutting out important fats from our diet. There are many reasons why we should not do this, but the one that I would like to focus on today is the fact that a diet low in fat has been none to cause depression.
So, why do you think it would cause depression? Is it because we are taking away the fun out of eating fat and opting for a supposedly healthier low-fat option. Well, that may be another indirectly related cause, but actually our brains need fat.
According to several surveys conducted in the case where a well-known type of fat, cholesterol, was found to be low in the brain, links between depression have been detected. Low levels of cholesterol in the brain were found in people suffering from mood disorders, depression, and bipolar. There were also surveys conducted on people that had attempted suicide and these people also had low levels of cholesterol. Other studies conducted on Korean students also observed similar phenomena. Serum low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), was found in many people suffering from depression.
Cholesterol is a complicated subject to talk about. It is not just about the good and the bad cholesterol. The image that most people have in their minds is that cholesterol should be reduced at all costs. But low cholesterol seems to be much more dangerous for us than high cholesterol, so where there are many other ways to reduce weight, we should not be focusing on cutting out too much fat from our diet.
Depression is a problem for many people no matter what their diet consists of. If you would like to talk about it, feel free to contact me. The first session is free.
