When I studied my Guidance and Counselling degree I was fascinated with how therapies can help people in many different ways to overcome anxiety, depression and improve the conditions of many other mental disorders. I really believed in the power it gave to sufferers and gave them new and positive mindsets.
I thought I would be great to do even more study and envied the opportunities that psychiatrists have to help people; however, I thought that counselling is more suited to me. This is mainly because I don’t want the responsibility of medicating people. I understand that it can help people, but I also believe that we need to try non-medication therapies first.
I think this is the case in many kinds of illnesses, not only psychological. People around the world are receiving medications to cure their illnesses, but never understand why they have the illnesses in the first place, or make little or no attempt to rectify the cause of the illnesses.
A relative of mine is elderly and is receiving medication for her high blood pressure. I asked her why her blood pressure was high, and she was advised that her doctor said it was because she is elderly. From my understanding, not everyone who is old has high blood pressure, and I have even been advised that I have high blood pressure, and I am not elderly, yet.
My blood pressure improved significantly with diet. I am not a doctor, but it is obvious to me that high blood pressure is a symptom of another underlying illness. If medication is taken to reduce blood pressure, it won’t help the underlying illness.
There are also a lot of stories that you can find online about people taking medication for illnesses and then subsequently needing other medication to combat the side effects of other medications. All of this just sounds so crazy. Taking any medication poses risks to your health so why do we need to take so much?
I would just like to get the message out there for people to ask their doctor questions and, if we don’t like their answers, get a second opinion. We shouldn’t be pumping ourselves full of drugs when they are only masking our problems. This goes for physical and mental illnesses.
I was recently given a dodgy looking test that measured the level of antioxidants in my blood by using some kind of light wave technology. I won’t name the machine, but I will tell you my results. My antioxidants were low, and the health care professional was in a hurry and just told me the reason was, I have too much stress. I was told they have some special vitamins to help me. But I was not satisfied with their answer. I also googled their machine and found out it was a scam.
Always be skeptical, ask a lot of questions and think twice before committing to taking medicine. Your health is important, and you need to be well-informed.
