I try my best to stay healthy by eating the right foods, exercising, getting enough sleep and taking some time to relax, just to name a few. I don’t have much control over family and friends, though. I can try to give them some advice; however, they may not heed it. I also do check-ups with my doctor every year. I get my blood tested to see how everything is going. I make sure that all my vital organs are healthy, but my physical health is not the only thing that needs checking.
I also need to do a mental health check. Even though I am a counsellor, I also consult counsellors when I have something on my mind, but I also check my symptoms by myself. During my training as a counsellor, I learned about the symptoms of many different mental illnesses. There are official definitions for depression, anxiety, bipolar and the list goes on.
In the near future, I will be adding many of these definitions to my website, and also simple tests that you can do to check on your own symptoms. My role as a counsellor is a bit different from a psychologist or a psychiatrist therefore, I cannot give a diagnosis for any client; however, anyone can get a good idea of what their symptoms are in relation to any mental health condition.
One of the main reasons behind publishing mental health check-up information on my website is to enable anyone to check on their loved ones. A lot of people may be aware of their own mental health condition, but may be worried about unusual or worrying behaviour from people around them. It is always important to have the skill of being able to reach out to someone and show that you care before things get too serious.
Just like any kind of illness, mental illness can be easier to resolve when action is taken quickly. Keep an eye out for my mental health check in resources. I will gradually publish them over the next couple of weeks.
