Oversleep? Never happens to me. Is it bad for you?

I am the kind of person that loves to wake up early and enjoy the peaceful cool weather in the morning. I go for a little walk and listen to the birds singing. The problem is I am also up late burning the midnight oil. I mean, I enjoy staying up late watching movies so, I often miss out on sleep.

I am jealous of people that are happy to sleep long hours. They must lead a slow life without stress. They seem to look forward to long sleeps over long weekends. I think it’s a waste of time. You can get plenty of sleep when you are dead. Actually, I found out from some research that oversleeping can have detrimental effects on your physical and mental health. Both under sleeping and oversleeping can impair your memory; it can promote inflammation, and probably worst of all, it can cause depressive symptoms.

I guess to much of a good thing is not a good thing. But there does seem to be a pattern in the number of hours that are risky to our health for these three symptoms. If you have over 10 hours of sleep you tend to be at a higher risk of memory impairment and inflammation, and if you have over 9 hours of sleep you are at a higher risk of depression.

So, set your alarm clock, don’t hit the snooze button after 9 or 10 hours of sleep, and enjoy a hot and strong cup of coffee.
