The Best Things in Christmas Are Free

Last week I talked about how we can bring Jolly back to Christmas. There are many reasons why people get depressed about Christmas and I think the first one I will focus on this week is the financial side of Christmas.

Whenever you watch the Christmas movies most of the time you will see how a lot of money is being spent on re-uniting with the family. Money is not only spent on the Christmas dinner but of course on the many gifts that are given to family and loved ones. I think we need to be realistic here. Life is not like the movies. We have all had some hard times during covid and many of us are still suffering financially from it.

So, I recommend making gifts for people. Don’t go out to the expensive department stores and buy brand products and help big companies make big profits. Go and take a class in pottery and make a mug, a bowl or even knit something warm for winter for your Mum. You will enjoy doing it. And I think for me personally I enjoy these kinds of gifts more than simple getting something from the store.

What about if you are isolated from loved ones. You may have moved to a new city or a new country and have not made any new friends. Well, I think Christmas is the best time to connect with people. There could be community Carol singing events happening in your area. It could also be a time to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas in your local church.

Connecting with family can also be done online, of course. If you are like me, you might be getting tired of zoom calls. They were essential during the lockdowns of covid, and many of us are happy to stop making them. But perhaps we need to catch up again. You could even organize a short zoom call and reunite all of the lost souls in your family again. Have some egg nogg and some pudding while you’re doing it. It could be fun.

If you still need someone to talk to, I am available. Feel free to get in touch with me. The first session is free.
