What Is Your Favourite Noise Colour?

I grew up in the mountains, and even though I loved it, I always wanted to live by the sea. I think when you are by the sea; you think about what is out there. You wonder what kind of amazing creatures are living in the sea. You also think about the fact that you are closer to travelling overseas when you are standing on the beach.

The other thing that I think of is the power of the surf. Even when the waves are not crashing down, I still think about how the sea seems to have a life of its own. When you walk by the water, your feet get cooled down by the gentle waves splashing on your feet, and somehow you feel that the ocean is trying to talk to you.

The sounds of the sea seemed to be very special as well. It is great to hear those sounds when you go to sleep. There is just something about that wave sound that seems to carry over long distances, when it is not blocked out by the sound of traffic, that is. There is no wonder why ocean sounds seem to be a great sensation on YouTube. You can listen to these sounds on 24-hour long videos.

I previously did a blog post on the sounds of rain and their effects on sleep. Rain sounds are generally considered to be an example of pink noise. Apparently, the difference between pink and brown noise is that brown noise has more bass to it.

I have found that sleeping with pink noise seems to be effective because it sounds more natural. It is normal for it to rain where I live, but I am quite far away from the ocean, so I need a bit more imagination to trick my brain into believing I am on a holiday by the beach. This won’t stop me from experimenting, though.

There are many benefits for both of these sounds. From what I have read, they seem to calm the mind, therefore reduce anxiety and also improve concentration. One interesting thing I found is that brown noise is similar to the sound that we hear in our mother’s womb, minus the heartbeat, and stomach gurgling. Not that I can remember that far back. I actually listened to a baby womb sounds video.

There seems to be limited study on the benefits of brown noise, but apparently it is gaining popularity. I recommend trying out different noises. Pink, brown, white, take your pick. Rain sounds ‘pink noise’ has helped me to relax. But so far, I am finding that brown noise is helping me more to stay focused and concentrate. Let me know how you go.
